Why do we ask this question?
Abscopal effect describes the shrinking or disappearance of tumors in parts of the body that were not the direct target of local therapy, such as radiation therapy. It is thought that in the abscopal effect, the immune system is stimulated to fight cancer in the whole body as a result of the local therapy. Learning more about the abscopal effect may help in the development of new cancer treatments, especially for metastatic cancer.
As part of palliative care for a cancer patient, Czech experts froze part of the painful skin tumor on his back (cryotherapy). However, within a few months, they found that the patient had lost all metastases and had completely recovered from the cancer. According to experts, this was possible thanks to the so-called Abscopal effect. This is a hypothesis that after local therapy of one tumor, other tumors begin to shrink, thanks to the awakening of the systemic immune response.
